THE DOWEL LOUNGE ARMCHAIR WAS AWARDED THE INTERIOR INNOVATION AWARD - SELECTION 2015

Picture
Thanks to its distinct upholstery, non-traditionally manufactured construction, and rounded shapes. The contours of the Dowel lounge armchair appealed to the Interior Innovation Award Jury, who awarded the armchair the title “ Panos Vasiliou and the Oscar Tange Italian design studio.

“We found our inspiration during our travels across India, where we noticed the bent parts of beds - typical for the majority of households. It was this aspect which evoked the first draft of the lounge armchair. It resulted in the exposed constructional details, the straps that hold the upholstery, the natural choice of materials and its very comfortable shape,” as Panos Vasiliou, one of its designers, described. It can be used in hotel lobbies, for chill-out areas, or cafés or even as a household solitaire.

The title “Selection 2015” in the Interior Innovation Award does not have to be the last one for Dowel. On January, 18th, 2015 - on the eve of the opening of IMM Cologne, the absolute winners of this year’s Interior Innovation Award will be announced.

The Interior Innovation Award was established in 2002. It is organized by the German Design Council with the assistance of the IMM Fair in Cologne. It is considered to be one of the most significant worldwide awards in the Interior Equipment industry field.

NOVELTIES IN THE MERANO SUITE WERE AWARDED THE GERMAN DESIGN AWARD
Picture
The Merano Chair and the Barstool were awarded the German Design Award 2015 – Special Mention. The novelties from this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile Fair in Milan build upon the successful armchair. They were designed for TON by Alexander Gufler.

“The Merano Armchair – Introduced four years ago, was awarded the Red Dot Design Award, the Good Design and the German Design Award Nominee Awards. We are very glad that the adaptation of its shapes reflected in the chair and the bar stool received well-merited attention too,”said Jan Juza, the Marketing Director at TON. Both models are simple in shape and functional. The designer´ aim was to make them look like statues in an aesthetic way; but, on the other hand, they are comfortable and practical to manipulate. Therefore, the Merano Chair and the Barstool combine a bottom part from massive wood with the harmonic bentwood shapes of of the seat and backrest. They are very light and contain no bolts or metal parts due to the manufacturing technology. The TON Company offers them in Beech, Oak, American Walnut and an upholstered model.

The German Design Award 2015 – Special Mention; is the 19th product to be rewarded for the TON Company. Apart from the Merano Suite; awards were presented to the: 911, Mojo, Tee, Tram, Wave, Rioja, Petalo, Simple and 002 models too.

Product catalog for 2014 and 2015 by TON has succeeded in two competitions. It won a category The Best corporate catalog in competition Zlatý středník (Golden Semicolon) acknowledging domestic corporate periodic and non-periodic printed materials. Then it won silver in category Product catalog at an international competition European Design Awards.

We introduced the catalog at IMM in January 2014. It has been prepared more than one year by a team of more than twenty people. Only the pictures were taken by three teams of photographs. The periodical has 250 pages representing a current portfolio of TON products from classical bent range to design news and much more. “We wanted to present them in surroundings, which they are made in. Therefore a set of photographs by Václav Jirásek is focused on the surroundings around Bystřice pod Hostýnem during the four seasons of the year. The landscape is pictured on its own or in harmony with the products. These were taken by Martin Chum in our old factory premises then,” described Jan Juza, marketing director at TON.

Moreover interior set is a concept, which presents accessories by Czech designers and brands, including Daniel Pirsč, Rony Plesl, Maxim Velčovký, František Vízner, Lucie Koldová, Jan Plecháč & Henry Wielgus, Martin Žampach, Brokis, Lasvit and many more. Styling was done by Michaela Tomišková and Veronika Jiroušková. Graphical arrangement was up to Prague studio Marvil with team including Pavel Zelenka, Jirka Karásek, Tereza Pavelková a Erika Huptychová. They decided for simple principles without excessive decor, sophisticated design, script Ladislav by Suitcase Typefoundry and charming pictures.

TRAM AND MERANO RECEIVED THE GERMAN DESIGN AWARD NOMINEE 2014

Two design products by TON have been awarded in the prestigious international German Design Award 2014 competition. Tram chair and Merano armchair were nominated for this award by the jury of experts and received the title German Design Award Nominee 2014.

A jury of 30 experts from business, education and science fields oversaw the contest. “The jury found all items registered in the competition to be on a very high level. The nomination for the German Design Award means a recognition of a quality design,” said Lutz Dietzold, Managing Director of the German Design Council. “We greatly appreciate it. Each award like this one confirms that we have chosen the right path,” added Jan Juza, Marketing Director of TON.

Merano by Alexander Gufler has already received the Red Dot Design and Good Design awards. Two bent pieces of plywood crossed axis-wise, serving as a seat and backrest are the dominant elements of the armchair. Despite these bends, the legs of the chair deny traditional bends seen in TON products and remain completely straight. The material used guarantees stability and solidness while maintaining a very low weight.
Tram by Thomas Feichtner, as a brand new chair of 2013, received the very first award. This model is exceptional as it blends technologies used for more than 150 years with contemporary design, and also because of its structural design. The chair joins technologically formed seat and traditional bentwood. The construction of the chair is simplified by the backrest of the seat that at the same time functions as the connection of the legs, which means that no other supports are needed. The chair is also supplied with arm rests that further highlight the unique technology of manual bending.

Award
The German Design Award 2014 is an international competition organised by the German Design Council. The awards will be announced during Ambiente, the International Frankfurt Fair in February 2014.

WE HAVE GOT GOOD DESIGN!

The Reddot Design Award for 2011 is no longer the only dot by which the Merano armchair can boast. The truth is that it has won a black dot as well, which is no less valuable. The oldest and most prestigious prize - Good Design – was awarded to this modern armchair by the American Museum of Architecture and Design, the Chicago Athenaeum, in cooperation with the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

TON WINNING RED DOT DESIGN AWARD 2011

We were awarded the prestigious prize RED DOT DESIGN AWARD 2011 for the MERANO product by the designer Alexander Gufler, a young Italian designer living in Austria

Within the competition, also the numb servant PETALO by the Italian designer Eugenie Minerva was acknowledged, receiving a special prize of HONORABLE MENTION in the category of Product Design 2011.
The international competition RED DOT DESIGN AWARD ranks among the biggest and the most renowned competitions in the world, dealing with the processing and design of products. Every year, an independent international commission evaluates registered products and evaluates them according to strict criteria, such as the degree of innovation, functionality and general product quality. This method of organization and evaluation is a guarantee of respectability of the competition which is supported and renowned throughout the world.
The new modern chair MERANO got its name from the hometown of the Italian designer Alexander Gufler. The dominant elements of the chair are two bent plywood sheets axially intersecting each other, serving as the seat and the back support. Despite the bends, the legs (bearing element) of the chair support the traditional bends of the TON products and remained completely straight. The used materials ensure stability and firmness while maintaining a very low weight. MERANO is designed both for those who choose a chair mostly for its look, and for people who prefer its practical aspect while sitting.
So TON continues its success when in February this year it became the MANUFACTURER OF YEAR 2010 in the Czech Grand Design prizes awarded by the Design Academy of the Czech Republic and with the bar chair RIOJA it won another international award "INTERIOR INNOVATION AWARD 2011", the prestige of which is right behind RED DOT.
